Presentation:

The Spearin Doctrine was established in 1918 and is as relevant today as it was then. It defines the relationship of the Designer, Owner, and Contractor in a nutshell. This presentation is a refresher on what the Spearin Doctrine is and how it continues to influence how we deliver projects to this day.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review what the Spearin Doctrine means and why it is relevant to every member of the project delivery team
  2. Understand the individual parts of the doctrine
  3. Recognize how the doctrine impacts each of the project team members (Owner, Designer, Builder)
  4. Explore how the Spearin Doctrine influences design, construction and closeout

Speakers Bio:

Michael Young, FCSI, CDT, CCS, CCCA is a senior level Project Manager for the Denver International Airport (DEN) Special Projects Team. Mike earned his degree in Construction Management from Colorado State University and has over 40 years’ experience in construction with the past 20 years’ in municipal government, managing projects through every stage of the Facility Life Cycle. Mike has been active at local, regional, and national levels of CSI for 30 years and is currently serving on the Institute Board of Directors. Mike enjoys being actively involved in representing CSI at the Associated Schools of Construction Region 6 and 7 annual student competition, he is a member of Colorado State University’s Department of Construction Management Professional Advisory Development Board, and an Adjunct Instructor at the Community College of Denver where he teaches Construction Practices and Documents
