Presentation:

This session provides building officials with a comprehensive understanding of wildfire risk and resilience strategies, with a focus on the built environment. Participants will explore national wildfire trends, case studies of major fire events, and New Jersey’s unique wildfire history and risk profile. The course emphasizes the role of building codes—especially the ICC Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC)—in mitigating wildfire impacts. Attendees will learn how to support code adoption, engage in Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) development, and leverage their expertise to shape safer communities. The session includes an overview of the International Code Council’s Fire and Disaster Mitigation team and concludes with a Q&A segment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe national wildfire trends and their implications for the built environment.
  2. Analyze major wildfire case studies (e.g., Marshall Fire, Lahaina Fire, 2025 Los Angeles fires) to identify lessons learned.
  3. Summarize New Jersey’s wildfire history and current risk profile, including contributing factors and vulnerable regions
  4. Explain the purpose and scope of the ICC Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) and its role in enhancing community resilience

Speakers Bio:

Justice Jones is a nationally recognized expert in wildfire mitigation and wildland-urban interface (WUI) risk reduction. He brings more than 20 years of experience developing strategic wildfire programs and advancing policy at all levels of government. Prior to joining ICC, Justice led Austin Fire Department’s Wildfire Mitigation Division and previously served as Texas A&M Forest Service’s WUI Program Coordinator. He has is an expert in hazard mitigation planning and development of Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) development across the country.
